Our Team

Our Adventure Operations Team is made up of Wilderness Leaders from the Outdoor Recreation and Education industries and the Defence Force. Our Physical Training Team are accredited Exercise Physiologists specialising in Strength and Conditioning. Our Wilderness & Remote Area Medical Team are senior emergency and remote medical practitioners and trainers. We use the wide-ranging experiences from these fields of expertise for our physical preparation, logistics planning and adventure delivery to ensure that our clients are provided with a safe and enjoyable experience.


Mary Smith – Director

Mary Smith

Mary, the founder of Aurora Adventures has a passion for adventure, education and for helping those in need.  Mary worked for 5 years with executive travel company, Executive Excellence as a trek leader and medic and spent the last 3 of those as Director of Operations, organising the logistics for local and international adventure treks. She also worked during that time as an instructor with The Wilderness Medicine Institute, Equip First Aid and finally as a trainer and General Manager of registered Training Organisation, Adventure Medic providing remote area first aid training and medical logistics and planning. Mary has organised and led charity adventures for a number of charities and was project manager for the Kids of Kokoda Association  raising funds for medical and education projects on the Kokoda Track, PNG including the planning and delivery of logistics for the build of a medical aid post/clinic in a remote village on the Kokoda Track. Mary also works as Fitness Manager of industry leading Aspire Fitness & Rehabilitation. Mary spent her years before her sea-change to adventure trekking as a lawyer in Queensland setting up and working as Principal of a five office legal practice in locations across Queensland.



Dr Will Davies - Co-Founder

Will spends 6 months a year living and working in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, the rest of the time he likes to get away from the rat race! With a background in Emergency, Intensive Care and Retrieval Medicine Will has set up and run prehospital medical services in the Indian Himalayas, Afghanistan and PNG. He enjoys teaching and encouraging others to push their limits.

Kimberly Ashby - Client Services & Marketing Manager

Kimberly is what we at Aurora Adventures like to call ‘magic’. As a result of her effort, skill and dedication to people whatever she touches turns to gold. With an extensive history in customer service, managing administrative and professional teams, marketing, service and detail delivery Kim is the glue that makes Aurora Adventures work. In addition Kim is also an awesome wife, a mum, an amazing friend to us all and loves boxing, running and the amazing beaches of WA.



Adam Garred – Exercise Physiologist

Adam Garren

All our pre-adventure training programs are written and managed by Exercise Physiologist, Adam Garred from Aspire Fitness & Rehabilitation.   Adam specialises in sport specific training and musculo-skeletal injury rehabilitation. Prior to working at Aspire Adam has been Head of Athletic Performance at UQ Rugby Club and Academy since 2007, and has also worked as a performance coach with the QLDReds, QLD Reds academy and Melbourne Rebels. While still keeping involvement with UQ Rugby’s Premier Grade Side, Adam is also Head of Strength andConditioning with Redlands AFC and currently works with two elite swimmers.Adam’s expertise also stretches to work with national and state level athletes in netball, tennis, rowing, and athletics.

Sally McWilliam – Personal Trainer

Fresh air, mountains and rocky cliff faces are just a few of the things that gets Sally up in the morning. Having lived in British Columbia, Canada for two years, it was there Sally found a love for all things outdoors – the more extreme the better. From snowboarding to hiking, kayaking to rock climbing and bungee jumping to living out of a van, Sally appreciates the small things in life by balancing them out with a healthy dose of ‘ larger than life’ activities. As a Personal Trainer, leading a healthy lifestyle is a central part of Sallys’ approach to life. She believes that having a strong and healthy mind and body can take to you places you never thought possible!

John Chad - Adventure Consultant

John Chad

Sharing an adventure in the wilderness environment remains one of the motivators for John working as a guide. His strong personal skills and versatility are a real asset on any Aurora trip. As a guide, he enjoys travelling through unique environments combined with crossing paths with people from different walks of life, those that he would otherwise likely never meet. John revels in sharing amazing views and moments with clients while helping them realise their goals in the adventure world. He enjoys the simplicity that comes from being amongst the mountains and the lessons that can be learned from the environment. Every adventure trip is memorable for John in its own unique way, “It gives me great pleasure in having the opportunity to coach and support people to realise that they are capable of much more than they think or believe is possible” In addition to guiding, John enjoys furthering his education and is currently studying a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) along with various adventure qualifications. When not guiding you will still find john in the outdoors, practicing, training and exploring with his trusty dog companion.

Tim Notting - Adventure Consultant

Growing up in country Victoria with 3 brothers, Tim's passion for adventure and the outdoors was instilled early. After moving to Brisbane at the age of 17 he began his 13 year football career with the Brisbane Lions AFL club. His career highlights included the 2001/2002 premierships and placing in the clubs best and fairest ranks. Among the many opportunities to travel the world Tim was able to complete Kokoda with his team, which was a life changing experience he will never forget. After hanging up the boots, Tim now enjoys keeping fit at local footy club Labrador Tigers on the Gold Coast. In 2009 Tim decided to turn his other passion of carpentry into a career, so began his apprecticeship and is now a qualified carpenter. Living in Brisbane with his wife and 2 children (2 yr old girl, 6yr old boy and 1 on the way) Tim ensures his family are just as adventurous as him!

Matt Wilson - Adventure Consultant

An experienced trainer, Matt hails from a military background and has extensive experience in designing, delivering and evaluating training on an individual or team basis in a wide range of settings. He is a qualified Instructor and Assessor and is particularly enthusiastic about designing simple, safe yet challenging training that brings out the best in individuals or teams. He has also had experience in leading teams in Australia and overseas as well as having worked as an operations planner on a number of occasions in remote and very challenging conditions. He has qualifications that include training and assessment, risk assessment and has also had previous life experience as a lawyer in Queensland.



Wade and Chantelle Adams - Adventure Consultants

Wade and Chantelle spent most of their first years together camping, surfing, boating and fishing throughout Queensland.  After completing his Electrical Apprenticeship, Wade turned turn down a career with a big Industrial company and instead followed his love of travel and took a job working on one of the remote islands off Papua New Guinea for two and a half months, and loved it!  With itchy feet, Wade and Chantelle hiked, camped, fished, kayaked, surfed, snowboarded, whitewater rafted and travelled their way through over 25 countries, for nearly two years, travelling from the Great Wall of China, to the Appalachian Mountains in the US, the European Alps, the southern deserts of Morocco and the jungles and beaches of South-East Asia to name a few.

Upon returning home they have moved to the beautiful Sunshine Coast, eloped to Fiji to get married and learnt to listen much closer to their passions.  Chantelle is currently studying her Diploma of Nursing and preparing to begin her Bachelor of Paramedics.  Wade has tackled the Kokoda Track, hiked and travelled around Borneo - climbing Mt Kinabalu and studied as a Holistic Lifestyle Coach.  Wade and Chantelle share a passion for living their individual dreams through a positive and healthy lifestyle, whilst inspiring others to do the same.



Dr Tom Solano - Adventure Consultant

Tom is a passionate doctor from the Sunshine Coast, keen to pursue a career in Adventure Medicine. Tom completed his bachelor of Biomedical Science and MBBS on the Gold Coast and is currently working at Nambour hospital. Having been a keen advocate for Global Health he was International Health representative for Hope4Health whilst completing his studies and since then it has only seemed fitting that he pursue expedition medicine further. Some of his adventures include working as team doc on the Kokoda treks, surfing Tonga, Fiji and surrounding islands and working in regional Broome.


Dr Jacqui Kelly - Adventure Consultant

Dr Jacqui Kelly

Dr Jacqui Kelly graduated from her undergraduate medical degree (James Cook University) in 2006. Her first 3 professional years took place at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. Currently Jacqui works as a Registrar in General Practice and Intensive Care in various private hospitals in and around Brisbane.

Jacqui has special and passionate interests in Sports Medicine and Expedition Medicine, with a career dedicated to these two streams of medicine being her ultimate goal. A keen sportsperson herself, Jacqui has raced at a national and international level in triathlons for the past 5 years, including world triathlon championship events in Switzerland, Germany, Vancouver and Hawaii. She completed her first Ironman distance triathlon in Cairns in June 2011.
